Pregnancy Massage Toowoomba

Can I get a massage when pregnant? The answer to this question is 'Yes'. There are many therapeutic benefits for a pregnant woman to receive a massage. You will find more answers below.

Pregnancy massage or prenatal massage is therapeutic bodywork that focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of pregnancy. It enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation and general body tone, and relieves mental and physical fatigue. The gentle, non-invasive approach of prenatal massage can ease discomfort associated with pregnancy, help the mother-to-be prepare for labour and give her nurturing emotional support.

Pregnancy Massage Benefits Include:

• Reduced back pain.
• Reduced joint pain.
• Improved circulation.
• Reduced stress and anxiety.

Deep Tissue Massage in Pregnancy

Many women are worried and deterred from getting a deep tissue massage in pregnancy as they fear about the risks to their baby’s health. There are key areas to avoid that your massage therapists will know. However, you as the expectant mother can still benefit greatly from the relief and relaxation of a deep tissue massage during pregnancy

Musculoskeletal System

The system that carries the greatest burden during pregnancy is the musculoskeletal system. Because of the maladaptive posture, the pregnant woman assumes as the baby grows, backaches, and muscle soreness are common and are the most common reasons a pregnant client seeks a pregnancy massage. As her uterus expands and gets heavier, her centre of gravity shifts forward and there is a greater strain on her weight-bearing joints, particularly her pelvis. The normal lumbosacral curse is increased and lumbar muscles are compressed. She compensates with an exaggerated anterior flexion of the head.

The slight softening and increased mobility of her pelvic joints is normal during pregnancy. This is secondary to the amplified elasticity and loosening of connective and collagenous tissue caused by the increase in steroid hormone circulation, particularly estrogen, the female hormone, and relaxin, the hormone secreted by the ovaries to soften the pelvic joints in preparation for labor.

The effects of stress on pregnancy

Stress has been defined as “any incident in the environment which causes an abrupt change in the mental, physical, or emotional equilibrium of an organism.” Pregnancy, for almost every woman, fits that description very well because this is a time of dynamic physical change and contradictory feelings about the pregnancy. Stress and transformation are the hallmarks of pregnancy, and how pregnant women, handle stress can have a profound effect on her health and the health of her baby.

The time spent incorporating alternative therapies into a prenatal time such as massage has a profound effect on the expectant women's physiological, or somatic, and emotional reaction to stress. Massage has a powerful ability to sedate and restore the nervous system. The relaxation provided by a therapeutic massage is further enhanced by the pain-reducing, or analgesic, the effect it provides. The release of histamines and local stimulation encourages blood vessels to dilate, waste products and toxins to be reabsorbed and excreted, tissues to be oxygenated, and pain to be diminished.

"Lynn is fantastic and her experience in health sets her apart. During physio rehab for a dislocated shoulder and fracture thanks to massage therapy my range of movement was returned in a matter of months rather than 18 months-2 years."  - Lenora
